What is the best diet to feed rats?

i have been bying a hamster food bag and i was told that would make them sick and that i needed to feed them foods like leftovers but to make sure to keep it balanced, and someone said that ferrit food is best. (the pet store here dosent sell actual rat food baged up)What is the best diet to feed rats?
You have two options, you can either purchase a good quality lab block formulated especially for rats (Harlan Teklad is inexpensive and pretty good quality) from the internet, or make your own mix.

If you cannot order blocks off of the internet, your best bet is probably something called ';Suebee's mix'; this mix is essentially half low protein dog food (pick out a dog food that is less than 50%) and half whatever grains and cereals you have around the house.

the recipe is here

You can change it a bit if you cannot find all of the ingredients

Hamster food is too high in fat for rats, and Ferret food is too high in protein! Both will cause your rat long-term health problems. What is the best diet to feed rats?
i think hampster food is the way to go but dont feed them leftovers(table food)that would not be a good diet for them unless its fruites and vegies which are healthy for them.ferrit food they could eat but my opion is to get rodent food from mice to hampsters with rats too.containing seeds, and mixtures of other stuff.you can find them in pet stores and maybe local stores.and since as you say that they dont sell actual rat food baged up then find bags with mixtures of seeds.and every 2 or 3 times a week feed them friutes %26amp; vegies and cut them up into however many rats you have cause they will end up fighting if you dont.hope i helped.
No hamster food, no ferret food, no guinea pig food, no rabbit food, no gerbil food.

Rats need rat food. Just like dogs need dog food and cats need cat food. Leftovers will not provide your rat everything it needs, as a human's nutritional requirements are much different from a rat's.

The best food you can get is Harlan Teklad. This is also extremely cheap, but has to be ordered offline. Since your pet store doesn't carry rat food, you pretty much don't have any choice but to order offline anyway.

Typically in pet stores a 2lb bag of rat food will cost around $7. Harlan Teklad sells 5lbs for $5. Of course you'll have to add on shipping costs, though. They also sell 15lbs for $13. Here's the site you can order from: http://www.craftyrat.com/Merchant2/merch鈥?/a>
you need to order rat food online. stay away from seeded foods those are fatty and ussually have peanuts in it for them wich is really fattening.give them fresh veggies everyday. stay away from onions or chocolate those are very bad for rats. hamster food is not good for them.and they can eat your left overs as long as if there is no chocolate or onions in it.
no. rats need rat food. buy the stuff with lab blocks and seeds and stuff for him. also fresh fruits and veggies are good once in a while(like 2-4 times a week) but not too much... hehe.
