Go to petsmart or something, and ask them for a rat. They keep them in the feediing room in the back of the store. (i know, its sad) but, if you get them this way, they are only two bucks each. But as for the cage, they can be up to fiftey dollars. esspecially if you are putting your two babies in the same cage. They smell A LOT if you don't wash the cages weekly. Cats shouldn't bother them, but if it does, ,make sure they arte in a place the kitty can't reach them(ps: put them somewhere darkish). Rats never bite. They do if you have something on your fingers, but its not painful. In fact, you ussually don't know if they are licking or biting most of the time. They can pretty much eat anything thats not to unhealthy, but sodium is very bad for them. By the way, if your rats are skidish, peeing and pooping a lot when you first get them, don't worry. They are just getting used to their surroundings and new owners. Make sure u take them out AT LEAST twice a day, and they get lots of attention. Well, good luck with your new rats!I was wondering how much it would cost to get 2 rats in perth wa?
I've recently built a cage for my two females because I couldn't find a pre-built one I was happy with. There is a really great website that gave me a lot of information and inspiration with my set up:

http://www.dapper.com.au/index.htm

They also sell some cage accessories and toys.

There are also a number of websites that sell wire cages (maybe search under ferret cage), just be sure that the bars on a wire cage aren't too far apart so they can't escape.

Also keep in mind a lot of the cages they sell as rat cages at pet stores are really not big enough for mature rats. The cage I built is made of laminated chipboard with two wire doors at the front. It's about 120cm tall and 45cm deep and wide. Including everything I had to buy it cost me about $150 and took me (a total amature who has never built anything in my life) about a week to put together using spare time after work etc. I'm really happy with the way it turned out, plus i get the added bonus of feeling proud of it lol.

The rats should be fine with the cat in the house as long as their kept out of harm's way obviously.

As long as you change their bedding and clean their cage regularly, they shouldn't be smelly, How often you change it depends on the type of bedding you use. I use fleece fabric in mine and change it twice a week (once if i'm feeling lazy, but then it does start to smell a bit).

Oh and for the rats themselves I paid $7 for one of mine and $12, both from pet shops, they're the cheapest part of the setup by far! =o)
Rat never bit unless they are hurting. Even when they get tumors they don't bite. Rats only live for about 5yrs. A ten gallon tank is about $15 with out lid. They are smart get one that locks or put weights on it so they can't get out. Food i have only ever used hamster food which is $3.00. I use newspapers and a hand full of pine bedding. Get a water bottle that hangs from the side of the cage. The floor ones they poop in and smells so horrible. Yes rats cages will smell they need changed once a week. You can give them a bath some love it. They will be fine with a cat. so lets add this up: cage $30, food $5, bedding $10, toys $10, veggies $5, water bottle $5 so that adds up to be $65. i put $30 for cage in case you want a wire cage from a pet store. They also like fresh veggies once a day. Get a Haida house that is edible so it keeps their teeth filed down. They are the most wonderful pet.
Hello

Rats are very good pets. I have rats. Rats will NOT bite if they have been well socialized from a young age. I think it is very good that you are getting two rats, as they are very sociable animals. I have two cats that are always around my rats, of course my cats have been around the rats for a long time, but I do NOT leave them alone together outside of cages. I do NOT recommend you let your rats free in the house with a cat near by, as the cat may kill the rat. Rats do NOT tend to smell, if you leave the cage for a long time without being cleaned your rats may begin to smell. If this does occur, you should get them out, clean out the cage, use 'rodent shampoo' to bath them in warm shallow water, then place them back in their cage without them smelling. Now for the pricing: usually a pet rat female costs around $15-25 depending on were you get them from (e.g. pet shop/ breeder). I do NOT have any rats available at the moment unfortunately, But I'm sure you'll be able to find great quality ones somewhere near to you. For cages and toys: It depends were you buy it from and how BIG they are!

GOOD LUCK!
The cage and equipment will cost a bit - but you ought to be able to get the full set-up for around whatever the Australian dollars equivalent of UK拢40 happens to be. If you can find someone else with pet rats you may be able to get the rats themselves free - rats breed very quickly and owners often end up with more than they can sell, so do make sure that you get two females or two males.

If you keep their cage clean, they don't smell at all. Rats keep themselves clean and you'll notice them grooming themselves and each other regularly. I've kept mice, rats, gerbils and other small mammals in the past and have always had at least two cats at the same time - although the cats were fascinated by them and spent a lot of time gazing into their cages, they seemed to understand that those ones were not the same as the ones outside and that they weren't allowed to kill them so you ought to be fine. Of course, if a rat escapes, the cat's instinct will take over and it won't be able to help itself so do make sure you have a good quality, secure cage.

Finally, rats soon become used to humans, especially if you handle them regularly from young - in fact, they're far less liable to bite and are a pet much more suited to children than the more popular hamster. Many owners will tell you that rats fed an entirely vegetarian diet bite less than those that are fed meat - I don't know if this is true, but I can confirm that all of my rats have been fed only vegetables and seeds and I have never once been bitten by them (the various hamsters I had as a child were a different matter entirely).
Please contact your local craigslist. Many times rats are on there.

Prices vary on rats and on cages. It is impossible to tell you. I can give you email lists to go on to learn.

Here is one:

initial set up cost is usually quite a lot for rats, i usually spend 拢100-150 for a decent rat cage but i have more than 2 rats plus i live in the uk so probably not a good idea for me to try to give you price ideas since itll be completely different from where you live. but one thing i will say- do your research before getting a cage! the makers and the pet stores are total con artists. the jenny cage for example seems to appeal greatly to new rat owners around here since its a good size and comes with tunnels, so people buy it full price at the pet store then realise theyve spent a ridiculous amount of money on a cage with uncoated bars and stupid little tiny doors that are a nightmare to get things in and out so then they end up selling them a few months later for less than half of what they paid.

they do have a slight smell as with all animals but not a bad one its just the smell that comes from the bedding and food, theyll only smell bad if you dont clean their cage but if that happens its not their fault its the owners fault.

as for biting, they generally never bite. as with any living thing theyre all different-some rats are biters but very few, the majority NEVER bite.

i have one biter but shes blind and borderline retarded, she bites purely out of fear and confusion so as long as im really careful and approach her slowly shes ok. but that rat is the only biter ive ever had and ive had probably around 50 rats altogether.

keep the cat out the room when the rats are out of the cage, especially when theyre little. when the rats are fully grown they may be ok around the cat, ive seen loads of rats being fine around cats especially males since they get really big so the cat wont try to attack them like it would with a mouse or baby rat, but personally id just keep theem apart to be safe and definitely NEVER leave them together unattended.

have fun with your new rattys!
