First of all, how big are they? Are they like a foot long? (Not including the tail) or are they small, like a few inches long? I am appalled by you wanting to get rid of rats, I have 3 and they are so sweet. Did you know that they are the most intelligent rodent? Or that they like to swim and can hold their breath under water for 3 minutes or more? Did you know that unlike hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, etc, they enjoy, even need, human attention. Well I wont weigh you down with rat-facts. If it is a wild sewer rat, I guess i understand what you are talking about. Use the most effective rat poison you could get!
You can use the rat traps sold at Home Depot or hire an exterminator. Also you need to find out how they are getting in.
Ballpeen hammer or small caliber firearms
We have shot them, in and out of the house. That is probably the most entertaining. The best way is to get no.1 leg hold traps. Set them in a narrow area where the rats travel. Behind a board or bricks along a wall works well. Wire down the trap so they won't carry it away, and use the ball peen hammer to dispatch them. Or maybe a long pipe. Or your small caliber gun.
