I'm an owner of 4 amazingly sweet, cute and intelligent rats.
They're much easier to care for than guinea pigs, I've had both, and I would choose rats anyday.
Rats are so smart, you can teach them their names, 2 of mine respond to theirs. Rats are much easier to tame, if you're a first time pet owner, I would say rats. They have their own personalities, and although they can be mischievous little critters, you can't help but smile at them :)
If you put in the time and effort with rats (it goes for all pets, infact) they will be your best friend. They will sit on your shoulder for hours, and not do anything bad, just because they enjoy your company.
Now I've never known a guinea pig to do that! :D

Rats live about 4 years, if you're lucky. Guinea pigs live 8-10 years.
Also, guinea pigs are easier to keep caged. Rats can squeeze through very small openings, climb and chew out of cages. Guinea pigs tend to stay put.
Rats. Guinea pigs are too loud. Guinea pigs eat alfalfa which makes for stinky poop, real stinky. Rats are more affectionate and bond closer with thei humans.
I prefer rats over Guinea pigs. they are smart and easy to care for. Guinea pigs can sometimes be flighty but rats rarely are. rats are also very trainable. rats rule
Ive had both. Rats are a little bit more affectionate, but guinea pigs are realy sweet and easier to take care of. Rats cages are smaller, however gunea pigs are going to need 8 square feet each.

I'd say rats are better for pets, but a little too greasy to eat. (j/k)
i think rats are more cute, and loving. i don't own one, but i did baby sit one and they are very loving littile things.
guinea pig, rats are cute too but they just have this wild sense.
In My Opinion, the only thing rats are good for is snake food.
