I want to make a homemade rat cage made from an old shelf, and my dad said that i could as long as the bottom levels are covered in flees and that the rat is potty trained. I really want to make them a bigger and better cage....

It is possible to potty train a rat but they will never be 100% reliable. Put the litter box in one corner and make sure it is large enough for the entire rat to stand in so they will feel comfortable using it. Then make sure the litter in the box is different from what you are using in the rest of the cage; if you are using fleece then put yesterday's news or carefresh in the box. Pick up any poops they do and put them in the box so they know it is a toilet area. If they start peeing in another corner, move the litter box there. It may take awhile and it may never work, you have to be prepared to accept that they will pee on everything, especially if they are males. They have a small bladder and a high metabolism which means they pee frequently and they also do it to mark their territory.

Good luck with your rats! How do you potty train your rats? i'll tell you why i am suddenly wanting to potty trian my rats...........
well, you couldnt just teach him, you would have to teach him by telling him no and moving his droppings or wet bedding into the litter box, and than put him in so he knows, you would alsoneed to find where they ';go'; and putit there by noticing overe a period of time, as rats go in one place most of the time, and the bedding you have in the litter box, needs to be differant than what you have in the cage. if your dad doesnt want ANY poo or pee, you might have ALOT of trouble, but if he doesnt mind a little at first, than you will be ok, good luck!

Of all the rats I have owned, fostered and raised, I have never been able to get them to pee in one spot. They will poo in one spot but they love marking their cage and although they may pee in the box, they will go everyhere else still.

Good luck!
I have only been able to teach my rat to come when I clap. I don't know if it is even possible to potty train a rat they do naturally tend to pee in one corner however and like to pee in bedding so maybe if you put bedding only in one corner it might, but I seriousely doubt you ever completely training a rat to go in one spot especially if it is a male.
Find the spot they go most in, then set a box here.

Plastic box will do fine, like a tupperware box.

Fill it with a separate litter. If you use aspen in your cage, fill it with carefresh. Like that.

Then put in a few droppings and soaked bedding.

And pray they make it. :P
