Why do rats eat wire insulation?

The front teeth of rodents never stop growing so they are forever chewing on different things maybe for no other purpose than a teething ring. Usually more so with squirrels, but rats probably would also do the same, will tend to cut up smaller wires and use as nesting material. I have never really heard if there is a true connection or not but some of the insulation casings are somehow made with the use of soy oil and ';a thought'; in the pest industry was that they were tasting the soy and thought the wires was substance. Why do rats eat wire insulation?
I was told that peanut oil was used in the production of the wire. The rodents smell it and go to town.
