I have a friend who owns 2 pet rats, and she is wondering how to stop them smelling all the time?

They are two male rats and although she cleans the cage every week, the rats continue to smell. She washes them every 2nd week or so,but it is getting harder as they are getting bigger and they are harder to hold while she cleans them.Any Ideas??I have a friend who owns 2 pet rats, and she is wondering how to stop them smelling all the time?
DO NOT use any sort of spray or scented candles around rats or any rodent!!! They have a very sensitive respritory system and the scents from these things can cause them harm!! If they smell clean the cage more frequently, wash it down better and also get some natural stuff from kimsark to remove the smell...they are a rat rescue and this stuff works and it is used by them around their rats and rodents..I inclosed the link for you.. ShazI have a friend who owns 2 pet rats, and she is wondering how to stop them smelling all the time?
well first of all she owns males and they are naturally stinky because males have a scent that they carry which is what they use to attract the females. i breed rats and i use carefresh bedding and that is great for the smell of mine. i clean cages every 2 days and using the carefresh keeps the smell down, but having males you will always have the stinkies no matter what. also you should spray out the bottom of the cage when you clean the cage this will also help with the smell of the rats. well i hope i gave you some good info. good luck
do not use sprays, powders or the likes on or around rats. Get unscented baby wipes and use those to wipe the ratties down.

What kind of cage, if it is galvanized (nothing on the bars, they look silver) the cage will HOLD the smell in the bars, and it will just keep getting worse. it is ok to bathe rats once a month or so, using a mild baby shampoo.

I'm giving you the link to an amazing rattie forum, go there and talk to those people they are great!
washing them may not be a great idea they will re oil their skin and smell worse... You can buy rodent powder to brush trought their hair . although this will not completely stop their smell...similar to ferrets. the best bet is to clean the cage every day and deal with the smell...
Male rats are naturally very smelly. If they are unrelated rats they will also be producing much more musk as a way of showing off their dominance, and may well be scent-marking the cage a lot more. Even related boy rats can do this if they are particularly unsure about each other.

Clean the cage twice, maybe even three times a week - there's no such thing as cleaning them out too often. Maybe give the bars of the cage a good scrub as you'd be surprised how much nasty stuff gets all over them from sticky, wee-covered ratty paws! Wash the boys once a week with a special small animal shampoo - the more you bathe them the more used to it they'll get.

I've been keeping rats for over 10 years so I know exactly what it's like living with stinkies!
Well no matter what animal you own its naturally going to smell in my experience with rodents two weeks is not enough i would highly recommened getting a small basin filling half of it with water and let them go in and out of it as they please and if this does'nt work then try some scented supplies for there cage but rodents are not the best choice for a pet .rats naturally smell So your doing nothing wrong

BEST OF LUCK
The only way to stop that horrid smell is to get a odor purifier. They can come in powder or they can be machines. They are usually very cheap depending on where your getting them from.Or you can just clean the cage three times a week washing it down.I hope I helped.Bye
FABREEZE works wonders on ALL odors........
Feed them to a snake. That way you never have to smell or clean them ever again.
